There has been a lot of issues with 3rd party apps, Octopus was causing issues in the UK but I am told this has now been corrected, it's due to the app keep accessing the car for battery status and this keeps waking the car up and then uses battery life, it does this so often it flattens the battery. There's a similar tariff in the UK, which was meant to work with KIA cars, but it's been disabled for the moment (I suspect because of the same 12V drain issue). 3rd party app access is an issue for the EV6 currently - whether it will get sorted is another matter.
Hi supergaijin, any updates for us on battery life after getting yourself off of the Smartcharge program?Hi all,
Glad I came across this thread. I have had this exact problem over the last few days. Anytime I leave the car parked and off for several hours, 12v goes dead. Had AutoZone check my battery- still shows as new so it's not the battery. Received an error message on the app that said " P31C507 A possible condition with your Vehicle Control Unit/Low DC-DC Converter has been detected". Happening over and over now.
I've had my First Edition since last year and haven't had any issues until now with this but I know it is a huge issue and there are other 12V battery problem threads here that discuss this in detail for several months now.
What could be causing this that has recently changed with my EV6 that I can think of are two things: I received an update the other day over the air from Kia which I believe only affected maps and the radio, but the other thing that changed is that I enrolled in the NY Smartcharge program as ggirl82 mentioned above. What I notice is that the EV6 is constantly in communication with Smartcharge as it shows my car is "connected". I was wondering how it would know my car is charging off peak or not and must be constantly communicating with my car.
ggirl82, I'm not sure if this qualifies as evidence of this being the culprit here but it may give us a clue. The Hyundai Ionic5 is a sister car to the EV6, similar in almost every way beyond it's shell. I found this article in InsideEV's called "Hyundai Finds Causes For Ioniq 5's 12V Battery Drain, Reveals Fixes": Hyundai Finds Causes For Ioniq 5's 12V Battery Drain, Reveals Fixes
Here is a key takeaway from the article: "The automaker says the 12-volt battery drain has been caused by two different unrelated issues. The main one is "overactive unauthorized Bluelink use by 3rd party apps that is waking up the car too often." Basically, unauthorized third-party Bluelink apps are requesting information too frequently from the Ioniq 5. Each time that happens it wakes up the vehicle, causing significant draw until it goes to sleep."
This seems very much connected to what many of us are experiencing. In this case, maybe smartcharge's constant connection with the Kia Access app that is keeping the car awake. draining the battery. I just deleted my car from the plan as an experiment to see if it helps while I am awaiting an appointment with Kia.
In the mean time, I invested in a portable battery charger to get me up and running and highly suggest anyone who is having the 12 volt problem do the same.
I will report back if and when I find a solution to this.
Good Luck all.
Hi ggirl82,Hi supergaijin, any updates for us on battery life after getting yourself off of the Smartcharge program?
sometimes it could be a defective 12V battery, also read people reporting multiple 12V battery problems and eventually turns out to be a problem with the ICCU...could be this if youre finding the car isnt charging the 12V?Hi ggirl82,
After deleting my car from the smartcharge website, the car sat 9 hours while I was at work and started right up when I came out (This again was after it died the previous two times while sitting several hours with the car registered with smartcharge through the Kia app).
By then, I had already scheduled an appointment with Kia to bring it in. I thought I solved the riddle of the 12 volt but Kia called me and said they again saw a similar error with the battery after sitting overnight there at the service center. By then though, maybe the battery was already drained? Hard to say.
Anyway, they received the directive from the Kia headquarters to change the 12 volt battery. Got a call from them today that after putting in a new 12 volt yesterday, the car sat overnight and successfully started this morning. They say all battery readings are now normal. Hopefully the ordeal is through and I'll report back if I have the problem again or discover anything new.
I did see in some other forums people discussing that Kiabsaid the 12 volts themselves are defective. If that's what this is, I would advise anyone having the problem to ask Kia to change the battery as it is under warranty and shouldn't cost you anything. Some other great advice is to keep a mini battery jumper in the frunk and not the trunk in case you ever encounter this 12 volt issue. The trunk will not open if your battery dies but the frunk will open via manual key to enter the car and the the hood release. Some unfortunate EV6 owners learned this the hard way.
Best everyone!
