Setup —> Navigation —> Guidance —> Route Options.

Ensure “Prefer Fwy” is at the bottom. (Maybe put “Economical” on the top since that would typically take slower roads).

My further research yet to be verified is you can only avoid highways by having the system select a route THEN go to “Route Overview”. You may have to scroll up, but it looks like you can select roads to avoid and request “Reroute “ .
Anyone try this?

That makes sense to me, in the absence of an actual option to avoid freeways.

Is there traffic information in your area? If so, it should avoid the roads if there’s a faster route.
