Can lower turn signals be added to US spec EV6?

11724 Views 90 Replies 28 Participants Last post by  tab4198
I feel like we got dupped with the weird chrome strips instead of the lower turn signal lights like the other markets. Does anyone know if it might be possible to buy the lower lights from another market and install them on a US car?

Also, I wonder what US DOT rule having lower turn signal lights breaks? It seems odd, I have also read that sequential turn signals are not allowed. Despite this, I saw an Audi Q4 the other day that had sequential turn signals, was this a modification or did they come that way?

It would be interesting to compare the front units. We have them, they just don't sequence. Are they different part numbers? Are they just wired differently? Or do they just get a different signal.
Remember we have the reflector headlights without sequential signals. I would think the matrix headlights would definitely have the sequential signals. I think it would be a stretch to think our reflector version could do sequential with a little mod work.
Rather they become sequential or not, is not really my goal.
But..
This will be the Only part that I'm looking to buy from KIA directly when they become available.
Making them work as a turn signal will not be an issue.
For me,, I think they will be the Finishing Touch to my project.

Ahh fair point, wasn’t thinking about the fact that they’re all in the same single unit on the front.

I’d kill for matrix headlights but I’m QUITE sure that’d require region specific coding.
Here's the diagrams for the front. Again, it's just a single wire connection, though I'm not sure what the "turn lamp actuator" does.

Do any of the various configurations have turn following headlights?
You'd be surprised with what code is lying around in the computer not being used. For a previous SUV, I didn't buy it from the factory with the Tow package. So I had a trailer hitch installed and then for like $40 bought the "tow" button and put it where my car had a blank. Pressing it activated the tow mode. It showed tow mode on the dash and the transmission shifting was very noticeably altered. Granted this isn't apples to apples as the tow package was available on other US cars, where no US cars have these signals. However, a coworker has a VW and just had to enable the sequential turn signals in the computer. The hardware and software already existed in that case. So it's very possible that the US EV6 cars have everything needed to make it work once the light is plugged in. Might not even have to alter the computer, it would detect the presence of the light and just work.

Not having the integrated lights means we are free to black out the chrome! That will look better IMO.

VW and BMW are both famous for “coding“ because they explicitly adopt the strategy of a mostly-software-defined region configuration. Kia, on the other hand, seems not to. There’s no notion of “coding” and it seems like a lot of hardware modules are different as well, like the clear harness difference for the USA-spec rear lights.
That's the bigger question- on the wiring diagram it appears a single wire is used for both the brake and turn signal light, makes sense since they are a shared element on the NA models. I'm curious what a Euro wiring diagram looks like, but I'm not hopeful it would be plug and play...
The US taillights have 4 pins: tail lamp, stop & turn lamp, telltale, and ground. As far as I can tell, tail lamp is for when the headlights are on, and stop/turn are used for those functions. Telltale is feedback from the stop/turn lamp; I believe US regs require a signal if the taillight is out (the "fast blinker" that meant an incandescent bulb was out). It doesn't look like there's a light sensor, it just runs the taillight signal back to the ECU so it's kinda pointless with LED taillights.

There's a panel you can pop open under the 12v outlet in the back, on the left side. Behind it is the taillight plug, along with another 6-pin plug that's for the trailer harness. I don't see any other connectors.

So I'm still going to say no: the animated turn signals would require additional wiring and/or ECU reprogramming.

It would be interesting if someone in Europe could take a look.
Do both of you still want someone with a European (or Korean) spec car to provide a wiring diagram and to look at what taillight connectors they have? I'm thinking about posting a link to this thread in the Kia EV6 Owners group on Facebook requesting someone with a European spec car to help since there seems to be a lot of Europeans in the group.

its possible but would need to test. The whole Lighting for left and right are a whole unit.
Anybody get any info on the international part number for the turn lights?

Definitely want the update when they’re installed! I think I’m going to add fog lights as thin strips on the silver accidents where fogs go in less-dumb markets. But I want to come up with a lens that’s a bit more directional than “annoyingly bright for oncoming traffic” too.
Gonna pull the assembly to see if I can slot these in… will update as I go….

Just checking, it's been 2 weeks, were you able to fit that LED assembly in place?
Hello all!

Just wondering if there's been any progress in getting the amber turn signals to work.

I'm currently in Europe and will be relocating back to the USA later in the year. I'm thinking of purchasing the EV6 when I return, and would really prefer the amber lights. If anyone still needs I can probably find out the EU part number for the tail lamps. Hopefully, this has been found to be a plug and play solution, I'd like to just bring a pair of Euro taillamps back with me if so.

Thanks!
Regrettably there is not a plug and play solution. North American cars lack the computer logic to control the sequential lamps (front and back). The rear brake and turn signal elements are combined, you can't isolate the turn signal from the brake lights. Lastly, the European spec turn signals DO NOT meet current federal safety standards, so you would likely be jailed or deported. Even if it were possible from an electronics perspective (it is, but crazy complicated), the cost of the taillights, perforated trim, electronics and wiring would approach $2,000.
I love the sequential turn signals and was major disappointed when we didn't get them. I have the skills to make the mods. But I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a feature I can't even see when I drive the car. (And makes my car illegal to operate on public roads.)
