ELE291 BMS Upgrade for Battery Conditioning Mode

9290 Views 144 Replies 39 Participants Last post by  EVConvert
This bulletin provides the procedure to install the Battery Conditioning Mode function on some 2022MY EV6 (CV) vehicles produced from November 17, 2021 through October 21, 2022 by updating the software logic of the Battery Management System (BMS). This procedure should only be performed if specifically requested by the customer and should be clearly documented on the RO that it is being performed “per customer request.” The battery conditioning mode will optimize the Direct Current (DC) charging performance of the electric vehicle (EV) battery in low outdoor temperatures, by allowing the EV battery to preheat prior to arriving at a DC charger site. The software requires that the owner selects a DC charger site as a point of interest (POI) via the vehicle’s navigation system to enable the battery conditioning heating when EV battery temperature is below 68°F. Battery heating impact on DC charging may vary depending on initial EV battery temperature and the estimated time to arrive at the POI. It may be possible to enable battery conditioning mode for a longer time prior to departure, as it can help to achieve the longer battery heating time needed in very low temperatures. Enabling the battery conditioning mode will use battery power and temporarily reduce the driving range until the vehicle is charged.

It's interesting that it's only "per customer request". Either this patch is good or it's not...It gives me the impression that there could be side effects.

It'd be nice for android auto to 'share' GPS info to the car; I like the updated AA full screen map

So far, only 9000 mi, in central TX I don't see much use for me. I had my highest charging speed a couple weeks ago of 237kW in 50F temps.
Nice, and its ALL EV6's just as I thought it would be. Very glad to see this as an EV6 light owner! It really sucks that the majority of Ioniq 5 RWD cant get this upgrade, but glad to see Kia was thinking ahead in including the battery PTC heater on all trims.

If you aren't up to date on your Nav/Infotainment software, you should update it as soon as possible. There's a new version coming out in May, and in the past they've taken down the previous version early. The BMS update requires it to display the conditioning option rather than winter mode.

Dealer won't run this at the same time?
Can anyone recommend a dealer in the Denver, CO area for this? I need to have the F/C update done too.

I needed the F/C update done too but my dealer says nothing else shows up for my VIN, anyone else seeing this? I think they just need another day since they said the system updates at midnight.

If the download is offline, they might not be able to update it either.

Isn't Nav/Infotainment the one update that's supposed to happen automatically over the air but rarely ever does? Have to download the update on a computer and load it on a thumb drive right?
Huzzah!!! Made my appointment for 7am tomorrow :)
Given we're moving from spring into summer, is there any reason to rush to have this done? I'm thinking if there are bugs to work out, getting it done next November would be soon enough. Thoughts?

Nah, that is how all TSBs are, done at customer's request or because the car had an issue. Its not a recall where they automatically do it to every vehicle.

In my case, it's likely the weather around here will remain <60F for at least a few more weeks. I also specifically want the update to do some long-range ski trips, and those will go like 20% faster with preconditioning even in 50F weather.

Plus, kind of exactly to your point - I'd rather sort out any issues now, rather than head off on a winter trip next season only to not know what I'm doing or encounter bugs and have a bad experience when it counts even more.

I just got off the phone with my dealer. That hadn't heard anything about this TSB, just the F/C and AMP ones. However, after I sent them the doc from @alansh42 they looked into it and can do it on my car. I had a appointment for this Thursday to do the 8K but they said they have to do this particular update at their "main" shop rather than their "express" shop where the 8K and other TSB updates would have been done. Their earliest opening for them to do everything is the 19th and they said they want it for the whole day (hmmm). Still I'm thrilled that we should have this installed before our next road trip at the end of the month.

My 3/2022 build EV6 goes in for its 8K service and the VCMS failed charging, the amp and C-F updates today. I am asking them to add this update so I may know by Friday if battery pre-conditioning is functioning.

Based on my experience of doing a road trip in 20f weather the other week and my preconditioning not kicking on like I thought it would (I did test the week before in 30f weather and got it to kick on), I am curious to see the experience of a lot more people trying preconditioning in the future. The time I did get it to kick on I still was only charging at 60kw on a 150kw EA charger.
