Curious to know if others looked at the Tesla Y and what were the main reasons they chose the EV6 over the Y?

I did (before EV6 came out, and before Elon bought Twitter). Not impressed by the vaporware FSD and poor build quality (panel gaps). Leased a Bolt at the time, still have it as our EV6 arrived unexpectedly early.

Didn't even test drive the Y but I have been on Model S and Model 3 before (the latter for a dash between LA and SF Bay Area) as a passenger, and tried driving the 3 for a bit, and ... the tablet-on-wheels and uncomfortable seats do not appeal.

I have friends who bought Model Y after initially wanting to get the EV6 but got turned off by sexist dealers (in the US south)... gg dealers, grr. They also don't care about self driving as much.

The wife would not accept the Tesla Y. Why? The Y (currently) does not have surround view and "birds-eye" view cameras which came on our Wind AWD with Tech Pkg. She could not live without this feature since it has been included on all of our vehicles for several years now. We drove our oldest son's Model Y and we immediately knew that the Tesla would not work for us. Like they say: "Happy wife...Happy life!"

Whoa, did they remove it at some point or was it never there?
Never looked.

Just from driving around in my car, seeing reviews , and knowing two owners, this is what I felt.

Didn’t like they all, except for the S, looked the like the same, nondescript sea of cars, didn’t like EM, didn’t like the no button, huge screen center dash or looking sideways for typical dash related items (saw that same thing, but smaller on another friends like 2000’s car), didn’t like the cost, the crazy long wait for delivery times.

The EV6 was the first EV that made me want to sell my 2017 Volt.

The styling of the Y was the first negative. The lack of a drivers display was the second and the inability to open the roof was the third. The last was the price in 2022.

NOTE: When we were looking for a BEV vehicle we knew nothing about EVs and had no access to most of the available somewhat affordable ones.

Wife detests the Tesla exterior design, loathes the interior design and hates the Ipad on the dashboard look.

Wife also fell in love with the surround view cameras on the EV6 and the sleek exterior design. The V2L is a plus for us in hurricane ravaged Florida. It gives us a very clean, simple way to provide power for power outages at the height of the storm, when running a generator isn't an option.

At our time of purchase, the EV6 Wind AWD was cheaper than a comparable Model Y after incentives.

Never there. They had sensors until they removed those o_O not long ago. There is talk that surround view/birds-eye might be available on the updated Y, once it comes into production, by adding some more cameras in the spots necessary to produce the appropriate views. We were not willing to wait for those potential changes to the Y model. The EV6 meets our needs and wants and was one of the first BEVs to catch our eye a couple of years ago. We do not qualify for the USA tax credit incentives so we could buy any BEV available once we were ready to purchase, regardless of incentives. Our local KIA dealer had just received some EV6s, we test drove, we liked, we came home with one after getting a very fair deal below MSRP. Very happy with our purchase.

When I was buying the EV6, the model Y was around $20-30k more and didn't qualify for $7500 tax deduction while the EV6 did.
Model Y also had suspect build quality, slower DC Fast Charging, bumpier ride, and I never did get a clear answer on 1-pedal driving. It seemed that with every metric I looked at, the EV6 won out except for charging network, mapping software, and OTA updates.
Didn't seem like that was worth a 30k bump in price to me.

For me, the main thing was Model Y's lack of certain features compared to what I had on my 2019 Sorento SX Limited that I didn't want to lose. The constantly changing feature set (removing ultrasonic sensors and disabling/enabling software features on a whim for example), constant price changes, and build quality issues so many people keep talking about all didn't help either. It was pretty much a deal breaker that Model Y lacks ventilated seats, but also not having CarPlay, SiriusXM, the bird's eye camera all felt like too much compromise, even if the on-board system is good. I still would really like to sit in one and test drive it. EV6 has some advantages like charging way faster, which is nice. I recently bought the 2023 EV6 GT-Line AWD, and overall I'm loving it.

Same, now that they added income eligibility. If it is still the same years from now I was thinking of using the lease loophole.

The Model 3 has / had bird's eye view right? I think I have seen it on a friend's car
I did look at the Y when I was contemplating which vehicle to get. Personally I like the EV6 exterior more and the interior much more. I'm not too big on the minimalistic Y interior.

That said, this was when the EV6 got the $7500 tax credit and the Model Y did not, and the Model Y was about $10k more. Now that the prices are more comparable and the Model Y get's the $7500 tax credit and the EV6 does not, I honestly would get the Model Y. It has more space, better tech, more range, and better public charging and costs a decent amount less. I could get over the less than ideal exterior and interior lol.
I own both. Each has their strengths and weaknesses comparatively. It’s really about what matters more to you and the $$$ of course.

Dollar for dollar I’d choose the EV6 as it’s the better car and the faster charging car.

1) fit and finish of Model Y is atrocious
2) I wanted a car with a computer not a computer on wheels
3) Model 3/Y have become NPC mobiles. Have you been to San Fran recently? All white Model 3s and Ys. Fitting for the NPC mentality there.
Compare that to less than 12 GTs that have been sold (with remainder to be order builds) in my metro statistical area of 2.3 million. There are more McLarens here than GTs.

Biggest reason was price / availability in the spring of 2022. I forget the exact numbers but due to tax advantage of EV6 and before Tesla's price drops, the EV6 was substantially less expensive, even with the dealer markup. Also due to just bad luck, both my other cars were destroyed while parked together outside my house, so being able to drive the EV6 "off the lot" vs Tesla's wait list was a big plus.

I'm glad it worked out the way it did, the other things I enjoy about the car:

  1. Just stunning design. Not the most important factor to me personally -- my prior ride was a grey '02 Honda Accord, if that gives you some sense for how much I value driving a "cool" car. But even so the uniqueness and enjoyment of it is undeniable, even sitting deadlocked in traffic is kinda pleasant.
  2. faster DC charging
  3. V2L - I installed a generator interlock at home and this has already served us well during 3 power outages. And it's handy for camping.

The biggest advantage to owning the Model Y is Tesla's reliable and widely available fast charging network AND their ability to do systemwide over-the-air updates. For day to day use, I prefer my EV6 over my traded 2015 Model S. But for long trips no one beats Tesla for charging convenience and trip planning.

We ended up with both, well, not the Y, we went with the Model3 to replace the wife’s Bolt.

Y at current price and tax credit is a better deal and more efficient. But then you have to consider the emotional component too.

something I noticed immediately about my EV6 was how much smoother it rode compared to my former Model S. Also less wind noise.
Not sure if they improved the ride in the Model 3. Heard it is a bit harsh. Enjoy both.

I much prefer the EV6 ride. Feels firmer, HOWEVER, the TM3 handles turns better, not have as much body roll as the EV6. The TM3 was a bit cushy with the OEM 18s, I put on OEM 20s and the ride firmed up, not as nice as the EV6. I worry about bending or bubbling tires on the 20 OEM TM3 wheels.

HD2 is much more stable than the TM3, and I can keep it going with much less computer nagging and not as much jerkiness, however, the TM3 does better in turns and keeping the car centered in the lane.
