EV6 AWD vs BMW i4

After getting a few ads for the BMW i4, I decided to finally take a test drive. I'm on the fence about trading in our FE for a GT when it's out or keeping the FE and adding a totally different car.

The demo unit was the i4 m50, with 536 HP, so it would be a fair fight against the upcoming EV6 GT.

BMW Pros
Handling. During the test drive I took a few hard turns that would have lost traction in the EV6. The i4 in Sport mode stuck like glue. Off the line it did not disappoint either, but it wasn't Model S level punch. The EV6 has always been enough in Sport mode.

The BMW infotainment was a win. Resolution is sharper and it looks more modern.

Resale. This is debatable but I found the argument online in the comment section somewhere. A BMW on the used market is highly desirable. Not sure how many aspire to own a used Kia.

EV6 Pros
BMW climate controls are almost 100% on screen. We might be annoyed with shared buttons on the EV6 but these are better than no buttons and knobs at all. The BMW I drove didn't have cooled seats.

Styling. My wife prefers the EV6 interior, especially the fabric dash. The i4 has just as much plastic but it's not cleverly done. She says the exterior on the BMW is not a head turner.

Rear seat space. The roofline on the BMW is sloped and leaves little headroom for anyone over 5'8". There's a transmission tunnel hump in the rear seat leftover from the ICE version of the car.

Trunk space. They're so close going by appearance alone. The BMW has a power supply included. It doesn't have a seat release in the trunk. You have to reach inside to drop the seats.
Think the EV6 front trunk is small? Theres no front trunk storage space at all on the BMW.

Noise. I heard more wind noise while driving the BMW. I had to check all the windows were up. The piped in fake engine sounds are not as tastefully done as the Kia's. I assume they can be turned off. Vibration and harshness were about the same on both cars.

Dimensions. The two cars are about the same size outside. Front clearance on the EV6 is higher.

Image. This is just my opinion but I make better first impressions in a Kia. If clients or employers see my car or even just the key, they won't think I'm high priced.

Here are two pictures I snapped before I thought of posting here. Sorry about the tree.

I only need V2L to power my refrigerator and freezer. I am prepped for no power. ;)

I just cancelled my i4 e40 Msport order. I had ordered the car 12 months ago to replace one of my Teslas. I have an EV6 GTline that replaced another Tesla. The BMW was scheduled for production in week 31, so, I would receive it in October. There are several reasons for cancelling related to the unavailability of parts for the configuration I ordered. They didn't have the wheels or the all-season tires I ordered. The only wheel option currently is one I really did not like. I've had previous BMWs with performance tires and I got 10 to 12K miles, so, did not want to do that again. They also removed several options altogether from the configurator, and they will not be available for all of model year 2023. This included adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist on highways (equivalent of HDA on EV6), and enhanced parking features, including 3D view. All these options were pricey, but, I was willing to pay for them; but alas, they are no longer an option, even if I was willing to pay for them. (I did not order my car with other options, such as HUD and ambient lighting, which of course are included with m GT line. Having owned Tesla's with the Full Self Driving option, it has been difficult to adjust to the limitations of the EV6 in terms of self driving features. But, I was simply not willing to do without adaptive cruise and lane keep assist on a $65,000 BMW i4.

oh man, that's rough. I just test drove a loaded e40 this morning and my impression was basically it was feature-for-feature comparable to the EV6, but better in nearly every way. Certainly not so much the case without the ADAS package or the parking cameras though (which - those parking cameras blow the EV6 system out of the water).

And they're really going to command the $10k dealer markup if the ENTIRE subsequent model year can only be ordered without the goodies.
When you say the e40 was better in every way, can you elaborate. The BMW is not faster, although, it is certainly a better handling car than the EV6. I think the infotainment is also better on the BMW. What aspect of the cameras did you find better. Did the one you drive have 3D view. My car would not, as it was removed due to chip shortages. But I would be curious what else you thought was better on the BMW. I was not paying a mark-up. The car, equipped as I originally built it was 64,800. Maybe I should auction my build slot -- just kidding. But, apparently there is a long wait for the car, and of course, the tax credit will dsappear at the end of 2023, as it will for the EV6.

All just first impressions, mind:
  • the best part about the EV6 physically is the same as any crossover - a hatchback with folding seats that lets you cram bulky and awkward stuff into the space however fits. Sedans are dumb in this regard - even if they've got folding seats, you still have the parcel shelf and rear windshield. The i4 gets this perfect, but in a compact and attractive sedan look. Obviously more space is nice, but day to day driving, I'd PREFER a smaller car than the EV6. i4 strikes a better balance for me with all the best sedan aspects and none of the drawbacks (since the trunk door is a hatch, and the parcel shelf is removable).
  • The auto steering performs similar to the EV6, but gives you a warning to take over instead of just stopping suddenly, leaving you to realize as you drift out of the lane. Pros and cons here, but BMW's style would be my preference. Adaptive cruise works about the same as the EV6, HOWEVER it will do stop-and-go on any road, not JUST highways like the EV6. Of course, it's an option package so there's that.
  • Top-tier lights, not that this bothers me as much as some about the EV6. Also probably that much more expensive to replace, though who knows how much Kia will charge.
  • 360 cameras. My EV6 seems to have some alignment issues with the cameras where, farther away from the camera, the stitching is perfect, but close in, there's a jump moving from side to front or rear. I mentioned this to the dealership, but they shrugged it off and didn't do anything about it so who knows if it's fixable. In summary, parking space lines are trustworthy on the BMW system, and questionable on my EV6. There's also just a LOT more fit and finish to the system on the BMW:
    • Projected lines for all kinds of maneuvers are clearer and seem more accurate, just generally offering more info
    • The system projects ultrasonic sensor measurements in 3D into the scene, which is seems helpful and certainly looks impressive
    • Auto-park actually works. I didn't get a chance to try parallel, so I'm not sure if it's an "auto curb your rims" system like the EV6, but at least perpendicular works much more reliably.
  • HUD: The EV6 HUD is useful, but somewhat half-baked. The most annoying thing is it's only sharp and crisp if you cock your head at an angle, because otherwise the reflection paths are different between your two eyes. I deal with it, but it's WILDLY better on the BMW. Seeing how good it can be actually annoys me now about how good it isn't in the EV6. Then the actual info displayed is better too - you get an actual map view in the HUD if you want it, as well as in the binnacle, neither of which Kia offers.
  • Seats: This is probably the biggest one for me: the seating adjustment range is WAY wider in the BMW. You can lower your seat down quite far if you want the racecar position and tons of headroom. You can move the wheel WAY out from the dash to sit far back to kick your legs out way in front of you. Or you can sit up and high cramped up to the wheel like a grandma if that suits you. The EV6 is objectively more limiting, especially for taller people. I got a comfy seating position just test driving the BMW. I've been driving the EV6 for months and my seating position is still a compromise of preferences. I could fix it like 3 different ways in the EV6 but I'm at the max extent of adjustability already for any of them. The BMW just worked.
  • Skis: the BMW has 3x independent folding seats, meaning you can fold down JUST the middle to get long items in with 4 passengers. This is not to be underestimated, especially when a roof rack costs so much (range) on an EV.
  • Power: I guess the e40 is slightly less powerful than the AWD EV6? If so, it's not enough that I notice or care. Also it's a little bit more FUN to have all the power at the back rather than split like the EV6, but that's also not a huge priority for me.
  • Tidbits: BMW doesn't seem to have any of those head-scratching "how did they let that happen?" quirks like a wireless charging pad with wired-only carplay, or power modes that mimic an ICE vehicle and force you to turn off the car manually or let you enter "accessory mode" where your stereo will drain your 12V battery in half an hour.
Comparing the two directly, it just becomes obvious in the details that the EV6 is a little cut-rate, and BMW took a little more time and money to dial in the finer points.

Good points about HUD. The ev6 HUD does have good blind spot info which I wish the i4 had but agree on maps.

I like that I can keep lane keeping on all of the time on the ev6 without having to use full HDA.
Thanks for all the great points. You must have driven a 2022. Unfortunately, all the auto steering and 360 view options have been deleted for 2023 builds. Incredibly disappointing. And really a deal breaker for me.

agreed. I’m going with a m50 which lost DAPP and PAP for a bit but just came back. Hopefully it comes back for the e40. I would cancel my order if both were missing.
I asked that my order be converted to a M50 to get DAPP and PAP. But they said I would go the back of the queue. Really not nice.
Yeah, that sucks - would be a dealbreaker for me as well.
I was waiting ages for my BMW i4 to be built so I had the chance to buy an EV6 AWD Wind w/ Tech Package in the meantime. I got a good deal on my BMW M4 trade in so went for it. Right before my EV6 arrived, the BMW started production but I still went ahead with the EV6 purchase. I love the EV6 but now, so does my wife. I was going to cancel the i4 order but I have had 7 BMWs and still want the i4. My wife will drive the EV6 when I get the i4 in a month or so. Thanks for the comparison reviews. Very helpful.

Once you’ve had both for a while, please do come back for a comparison!

Also, I think you’re right to keep the reservation if only since you’ll likely be able to turn a profit if you simply sell it after a few months, if it’s true that the new production can’t be ordered with half the fun parts.

That is very true. The i4 e40 2023 model does not have DAPP or PAP.
I'm picking up my Wind AWD with tech next month but in the meantime I have a BMW i4 e40 and it's wonderful. The interior, audio, and adaptive suspension are top notch. What I didn't expect is the efficiency to be somewhere between a Tesla Model 3 RWD and Y - around 3.9 to 4.0 mi/kWh here in Florida. That's insanely great. I don't expect the EV6 to hit 3.5 mi/kWh the way I drive and given the efficiency numbers.

I drive pretty aggressively...
This morning driving 'nicely' to drop daughter off at school I got 5.05, on way home (aggressive) I got 3.63 (in sport mode)

You drive local roads I'm 100% sure.

I drive 80% highways at 70+ mph with no stop and go.

My Mach-E GT Performance efficiency was 2.6 mi/kWh. After getting a speeding ticket (going 90 in a 50 zone - rural and empty area but I was caught) I decided the EV6 GT probably would not be good for me and so I traded the GTPE away. Doesn't help my insurance just spiked 50% either.

EDIT: I had a MINI electric and never saw better than 4.0 mi/kWh which is about 100-ish miles of ranges. Folks talk about an imaginary 120-130 mile range but I never saw that.

correct, all local roads.

lowest highway was similar to yours. going 85ish mph got me 2.8 mi/kWh...and that was the trip averaged out with local access roads
Just find it impossible to get anywhere near 4 on any model and style of driving, just do not see how others can be doing it let alone a 5.

I had the same thought but lately I’ve been driving around town in eco/regen 1 and consistently hitting 4 end to end. I kind of prefer normal ipedal and it’s a surprisingly noticeable hit (I mean, I guess it SHOULDN’T be surprising but still)

I should add- temps are moderate now here so I’ve been driving with the AC either off or at least doing less work, and for short slow trips it seems to make a surprising amount of difference as well.

Eco Mode, Regen 1 no climate on at all and i get mid 3.5 at best driving like I am Miss Daisy.
