I was at my local KIA dealer today as my wife wanted to see the Sportage. I asked the dealer if he had any EV6´s coming in. Said he had one that was supposed to come in but the customer didn’t want it anymore. So I said I’ll take it. Unfortunately it doesn’t work this way I was told. Apparently that car now goes to the next person in the queue for Canada. I was very surprised to hear that.
In the US, the FE reservation was really just directing an FE car to your chosen dealership and then having first chance to strike a deal with that dealership for that car. It's the dealership's though to sell.
In Canada though they took purchase deposits and - to curtail any bad behaviour by dealerships - they're treating all orders as a queue, and vehicles can only be sold and registered to the name on the queue. Kia Canada has also been doing this same thing with non-EV6 cars in high demand, preventing dealers from ordering one for "Joe Canuck" and then having a car to demo or sell off the lot. They actually charge dealers for re-shipping if a customer doesn't buy a vehicle custom ordered through the dealership. Hyundai Canada is doing something similar with the Ioniq 5 but are starting to be a bit more flexible with re-allocations.
FYI there's a Canada sub-forum you might be interested in.
