Do you need to use their Navigation Update utility to create the USB stick? I downloaded the files to my local HD, and it seemed to have a step where it was suppose to copy to the USB, but then the utility seemed to freeze. I ended up killing the running instance, and now it looks like it wants me to start all over again from the download part. Can I just copy the update files to my USB stick directly? If so, what's the folder structure on the stick, do the files just copy into the root of the USB stick?

Files currently on my HD:

There have been folks whose USB drives when plugged in did not get recognized as containing an update when they manually copied the files to the USB, and using the utility to do the copying fixed it. There's no noticible difference in the folder structure from when the utility does it, but it does something differently to ensure the infotainment recognizes the USB as having an update. So I would recommend to start over with the Navigation Updater in your case.

So that's just for navigation system updates? Are any other updaters self-installable via USB?
It contains navigation and infotainment/audio updates. For example, the infotainment menus where certain features are nested can slightly change. In last October's update, the audio volume scale was changed where 45 is max volume when before that it was 100. But yes, this package and these systems are the only things that update via USB or OTA. For the EV6, any other updates to the electrical/driving systems are issued by a Kia TSB and can only be updated by a dealership.

No--you can drag and drop the files to your USB drive; just make sure that said USB drive has been formatted exFAT and has at least 64 GB of free space.

Please be informed that downloading the file without using the application may result in the file remaining compressed. Additionally, attempting to drag and drop the file onto a USB stick for installation may lead to failure.
This is the reason why the file on the USB ends up being considerably larger than the compressed file that was downloaded.
The most effective method is to use the Desktop application and set it to download directly to the USB flash drive (the application will perform all the necessary steps to decompress the files and prepare them for the vehicle update).

I've never had any update issues/failures resulting from my having manually copied over the downloaded files from my PC to the USB stick; furthermore I've not seen where the files that I've copied over to the USB were considerably larger than what was downloaded. I suspect what might be happening in such cases is that somehow during the drag-and-drop process the files are automatically being extracted (most of the files are tarballs--in the below screenshot the files shown there are the same exact ones I dragged and dropped (or, copy/pasted) from my PC to my USB drive), most likely as a result of unknowingly selecting a drag-and-drop menu option that allows for performing a untar/unzip operation during the drag-and-drop process.

Ironically enough, the one time my infotainment update failed to complete successfully I had elected to choose the option for the app to download directly to the USB drive; ever since that failure I've always gone with manual file copy after download--no update failures whatsoever since. My methodology is this--download files to PC using the Kia desktop app; wait for app to tell me that it finished downloading all files, then exit out of the app; manually copy files from PC to USB drive.

I'll have to give this a try on the next update. I suspect what happened in my case was that I wasn't prepared with a USB when I was going through the process, so when it asked for a USB stick, I ended up inserting one, formatting it, and then pointed the utility to it after it had already been running (ie. the USB stick wasn't discoverable at the time the utility was launched.) I'm wondering if that maybe caused the utility to get confused when it was suppose to be copying the files out there.

Got an alert from the Kia Access mobile app this afternoon:

"Head unit software has failed to install update."

My EV6 has been at the dealership for 2 weeks while they try and figure out the dead 12V battery issue. The car is "alive" currently but I wonder if someone cancelled the update or something else went wrong.

@tonester
There is an alternative option to download the files to your desktop hard drive using the desktop application and then transfer them to the USB drive. This method should work similarly to directly downloading to the USB drive using the app.
However, downloading directly from the website without using the desktop app may cause issues. I have not personally tested this method, but this information was provided to me by the software engineering department.

Factory scanner has ability to override any updates if work has been preformed at the time of software was trying to attempt update.

Is this documented anywhere? I don't recall seeing the direct download path. I use Linux and the only reason I keep a copy of Windows installed is to download the Kia updates. I'd happily reclaim 100GB of SSD space if I could bypass the Kia app. Thanks!
