As I was poking around the wireless charging module and had it removed today, I realized what's going on in there.
That locking post that comes out from the wall is actually attached to a free-swinging weight inside the armrest. It looks like it's designed so that if you rapidly decelerate or flip upside down, inertia/gravity swings the weight to eject the locking pin so the armrest lid stays closed.
Who knows how well it works in an actual accident - I don't intend to flip my car to find out. But it seems to be an entirely passive latching mechanism for crash safety - locked anytime gravity is in the wrong direction for keeping the contents in the bin.

Noticed that no one has talked about the center consle glove box. What is this? Is it some type of electric locking mechanism. Did they started the process to make it work but didn't get it finished? If it is a lock, when does it engage?
