Ford Adding NCAS to Their EVs starting in 2025

Current Ford EV owners will be able to buy an adapter to use at Superchargers early next year as well.

So, how long before CCS goes the way of Chadmo?

At the moment.....there are Billion$ of federal dollars for CCS charging infrastructure. Until that changes there is zero risk.

Betamax was an awesome video format....
ArsTechnica article. Very, very interesting....

Interesting approach - I wonder if at some point they will just sell a CCS adapter and then let us use the Tesla app for payment.

Tesla might be angling to qualify for federal dollars here? IIRC the funding is for any system adopted by at least two carmakers, not specifically CCS.

That's the cynic in me talking anyway. The charitable half says this is a trial run before they open it to other EV models. But I'm not holding out much hope.

Anyway, Tesla uses CCS in Europe so... will be a very long time before that goes away
The second part is that Tesla will be developing an adapter that current Ford owners will be able to use next spring.

Would a Supercharger-to-CCS adapter be compatible with 3rd-party EVs like the EV6? One could hope…
Physically it will be compatible, the worry is - from the other thread Ford signs agreement with Tesla to implement NACS natively that cites ArsTechnica, Ford EVs will get access to Tesla’s Supercharger network in 2024

Payment will be handled through the FordPass app

I would hope so. As superior as the NACS plug is, having one industry promulgated standard even if CCS is better. If we're gonna ditch CCS for NACS, something I would (in a way) like to see, then the sooner the better. But, wow, what would that do to resale of CCS equipped cars if there's no super easy to use adapter?

Such an adapter definitely will exist - current Fords will need it - but yeah if it is sold by Ford and only works with their app, then ... boo.

Hopefully the IRA funding for charger funding is not that easy to game - it's not a "standard" if you don't have open access for other manufacturers - but we'll see.
I’m curious if future Ford EVs will have the Tesla connector instead of CCS, or both? They didn’t seem to specify.

From the Ford press release:

Ford Press Release said:
  • In 2025, Ford will offer next-generation electric vehicles with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector built-in, eliminating the need for an adapter to access Tesla Superchargers
Yeah that line isn't clear. It doesn't explicitly mention if it'll completely replace it or if they'll just have two different ports.

I bet when they implement NACS, it will be in the same location as other Tesla cars making it backward compatible. I think its a smart decision as NACS is 1000x better than CCS right now. I don't see CCS catching up in two years. EA is a joke and they are carefully monitoring their bottom line (as are other charge point providers). Tesla on the other hand makes money hand over fist right now and are aggressively rolling out new charging locations (and barely cares about their bottom line with regards to chargers). I think if GM jumps ship to NACS, i wouldn't be surprised if Tesla wins the North American charging standard.

Is Ford going to change its badge to Tesla  🤣

Will be interesting to see as Tesla uses CCS over in Europe. Ford would have to do the same if their new car comes over this side of the pond, so I don't see CCS going away anytime soon.
Will not be long before you can use the Tesla chargers but you will be charged an extra fee for their use, you can see Eoin now thinking he can make more money, charge an extra 10 cent or 10p per kWh for non Tecla's cars.

EVs are evolving so quickly that one should expect resale values to be low anyway. By the time NACS replaces CCS, today's EVs will be inferior in many other ways as well.
Ford would have to do the same if their new car comes over this side of the pond
Except Ford's European cars are increasingly

  • sedans not sold in the US
  • smaller SUVs on the licensed VW MEB platform

So for all intents and purposes it has nothing to do with the US models apart from some like the Mustang E
