Future Ford EVs Will Be Equipped With Tesla Charging Port
Ford has just announced that its next-generation electric cars get Tesla's charging connector, which means that Ford EVs will be able to use Superchargers.insideevs.com
So, how long before CCS goes the way of Chadmo?
Payment will be handled through the FordPass app
I would hope so. As superior as the NACS plug is, having one industry promulgated standard even if CCS is better. If we're gonna ditch CCS for NACS, something I would (in a way) like to see, then the sooner the better. But, wow, what would that do to resale of CCS equipped cars if there's no super easy to use adapter?Interesting approach - I wonder if at some point they will just sell a CCS adapter and then let us use the Tesla app for payment.
Such an adapter definitely will exist - current Fords will need it - but yeah if it is sold by Ford and only works with their app, then ... boo. But, wow, what would that do to resale of CCS equipped cars if there's no super easy to use adapter?
From the Ford press release:I’m curious if future Ford EVs will have the Tesla connector instead of CCS, or both? They didn’t seem to specify.
Ford Press Release said:
- In 2025, Ford will offer next-generation electric vehicles with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector built-in, eliminating the need for an adapter to access Tesla Superchargers
Yeah that line isn't clear. It doesn't explicitly mention if it'll completely replace it or if they'll just have two different ports. From the Ford press release:
Will be interesting to see as Tesla uses CCS over in Europe. Ford would have to do the same if their new car comes over this side of the pond, so I don't see CCS going away anytime soon.I bet when they implement NACS, it will be in the same location as other Tesla cars making it backward compatible. I think its a smart decision as NACS is 1000x better than CCS right now. I don't see CCS catching up in two years. EA is a joke and they are carefully monitoring their bottom line (as are other charge point providers). Tesla on the other hand makes money hand over fist right now and are aggressively rolling out new charging locations (and barely cares about their bottom line with regards to chargers). I think if GM jumps ship to NACS, i wouldn't be surprised if Tesla wins the North American charging standard.
EVs are evolving so quickly that one should expect resale values to be low anyway. By the time NACS replaces CCS, today's EVs will be inferior in many other ways as well.I would hope so. As superior as the NACS plug is, having one industry promulgated standard even if CCS is better. If we're gonna ditch CCS for NACS, something I would (in a way) like to see, then the sooner the better. But, wow, what would that do to resale of CCS equipped cars if there's no super easy to use adapter?
Except Ford's European cars are increasinglyFord would have to do the same if their new car comes over this side of the pond
