I ordered a Matte Grey but now questioning my decision. Anybody actually seen it in person, if yes, what's your impressions. Does it have any shine to it or does it look like it's missing a coat of paint? Any pics would be a bonus.

hey there @Timmies, happy Saturday!

So, there's pictures all over the internet and most early press videos on youtube are of the matte grey. It is like having a semigloss paint. Not reflective but does have a little shine to it.

I ordered the matt grey myself.

We also ordered the grey, I'm sure the look will be sharp with the body stye. My worry is the long term protection. Did ceramic coating with our last car, impressive. Pretty certain a repeat is coming.

I've seen the EV6 and Ioniq 5 matte grey in the flesh. They don't do a lot for me, however, I like a shiny car and beauty is in the eye of the beholder ;) . Of course all the negative comments about not using shampoo or normal washing together with not being able to repair minor scratches doesn't help.

My dealer had both the Matte Grey for their demo car back in September and they also had a RWD one for a customer so I saw them both.

I have ordered the Matte Grey so I was particularly keen to see this colour "in the flesh". I have to say that it looks stunning - really nice.

Now, I have just accepted the fact that I am going to have to get the whole car vinyl-wrapped to protect this paint job - but once I got over that, I am happy with the choice.

I thought vinyl wrap would not seal the matte in its favor.

I'm debating Matte Grey which really suits the EV6, but my local bodywork specialist agrees it needs full protective film cover to properly maintain paint finish.
Full PPF by Xpel Matte film will cost over 4k!!!
The local specialist still waiting to hear if Xpel will foot cost of design/cut out patterns - otherwise it will cost even more!

Ordered a First Edition with the Matte Grey. Didn't like the other color options. Matte is not supposed to be shiny. We have quite a handful of premium brands roaming our streets and they don't shine and stand out. It's rarely on anything other than premium brands and not for everyone.

If it is OK looking, and the dealer is reasonable on pricing, I'll plan on using some ceramic coating for matte paint along with wash for matte paint - one's that don't shine. One shouldn't use the standard wax or ceramic coatings or wash (let alone autowash) as it defeats the point of getting matte paint. There are a couple brands for the DIYers, but Chemical Guys has the sealers, wash, etc. for matte.

Last email said Feb-May, so I'll have to wait to lay eyes on it....

I'd suggest a quick YouTube search and video for the why and how much. From a layperson perspective, it's much longer lasting and better a protecting against contaminants and UV than a wax or polish. If a bottle/can of McGuire's were US$10, then a bottle of ceramic is US$50-70. Similar process and effort to apply - once you've thoroughly washed / prepped it. DIY will last 2-3 years if you garage your vehicle. Professional applications can last up to 10 years.

You can opt for PPF from a shop that will have some additional protection but the thousands they'll charge is too big of a price tag for me.

To offer you some reassurance, I have a 2012 model Renault with factory matte grey paint. US readers won't know the car but for the UK readers it is a Clio RS Raider edition. After 10 years, the matte paint is still in excellent condition with minumal upkeep. No PPF, no ceramic coating. Just regular washing with a wax-free car detergent (I use Maquires soft-wash gel) and an occasional going over with a matte detailing spray sealant (I use Chemical guys - the second photo shows the effect after morning dew). Seriously, that's it. Plus this car has spent numerous Australian summers parked outside in the sun. Compared to the roof of the car which is a traditional gloss black finish with clear coat, the matte body panels are in better condition.

Only two issues: 1) If you scratch it, it won't "buff out". But its no easier to scratch than any other paint. 2) If you need any part repainted, its a nightmare to colour match. My car had the front bumper repainted by the previous owner after a minor collision and the colour mismatch is quite obvious. It's not the colour per se, more the way it reflects direct sunlight. Perhaps the bodyshop was not up to the task but I think matching it has got to be more difficult.

Enjoy your moonscape grey matte paint and stop stressing.
