Not Cool Michigan with the EV tax!

For those not from Michigan, the vehicle registration (including renewal of tags) is based on MSRP.

$319 just for tab/registration

But….there’s also a EV fee and tax on top of that!

EV registration fee: $100
EV Registration Tax: $48

Official reason is to make up for loss of gas tax

What’s the situation in your state?

added later:

The math:

Current Michigan gas tax: $0.173 / gallon

EV “tax” = $148/year

That’s equivalent to 855 gallons of gas

At 25mpg = 21,387 miles / year
At 20mpg = 17,100

So EV’s are over taxed! To the Streets! 😎😂

Yes in Virginia. The Highway Use Fee applies to any vehicles that get 25MPG or better.
I don't have a problem with it if the tax is applied to road maintenance. That money must come from somewhere.

As I'm retired and don't drive a lot, I joined Virginia's Mileage Choice Program that tracks my actual mileage (OBD dongle) and may result in a reduced fee.
In Alabama, it is a straight $200 add-on for EVs to the annual tag renewal.
The Indiana fee is $150 for EVs (and $50 for hybrids).

The current gas tax is $0.199/gallon so 754 gallons would need to be used to make up the difference.

20 MPG equivalent = 15075 miles
25 MPG equivalent = 18844 miles

I'm all for contributing to pay for the infrastructure, but it should be mileage-based and not just some arbitrary fee.

I'm just learning about this "Highway Use Fee" in Virginia due to my upcoming EV6 registration, however I'd rather pay into having more electric vehicle charging stations as they are few and far between. According to VA DMV, "The highway use fee (HUF) helps make up for the fuel taxes that drivers with fuel-efficient and electric vehicles spend less on, because they’re not using as much fuel. This fee supports the Commonwealth Transportation Fund, which helps maintain our roads, highways, transit and airports." "For an electric motor vehicle, the highway use fee shall be 85 percent of the amount of taxes paid under subsection A of § 58.1-2217 on fuel used by a vehicle with a combined fuel economy of 23.7 miles per gallon for the average number of miles traveled by a passenger vehicle in the Commonwealth."
That's bunk. So dumb that some states seem to disincentivize EV ownership.
It makes sense that EVs would have to pay some sort of extra registration fee. Not only do EV owners not pay gas tax, EVs also tend to weigh more than comparable ICEs, so the wear and tear caused by an EV is likely higher than caused by a commensurate ICE.

The money for maintaining the roads has to come from somewhere. 🤷

Straight $200.00 yearly plus $65.00 annual registration fee (all vehicles pay that)
NC I believe is $140 if I remember correctly

Looks like michigan tax is all over the place. This article

Michigan gas tax increases by 5%, 6th highest gas tax in the U.S.

claims 28c. But don't forget there's an 18c tax from the fed you pay if you buy actual gas. While it remains to be seen if the fed will ever come looking at EV's for that part, it is a tax you pay with an ICE, so your savings offset is more like double.

What bothers me about all this is that someone DOES have to pay to maintain the roads, but I have zero (actually negative) trust that politicians that start taxing EV's will actually spend that money on roads.

It's like lotteries -- they were supposed to fund schools, but almost dollar for dollar the additional money from lotteries that "went to schools" was accompanied by funding cuts from other sources. Lotteries did not, on net, fund schools - they funded other spending programs, with fairly level school funding (after growth, etc. is considered), in almost every state.

Politicians cannot be trusted with a new revenue stream, no matter how "fair" (or not). They just spend it on their pet projects (mostly getting re-elected, sometimes self enrichment more directly).
