What do you mean by “exercised the vents”. Can you elaborate?
Quite literally just pushed up on the grille vents a little bit. Not forcefully, just lightly poking upward. I can only assume that either something small had lodged in mine, or whatever mechanism that moves them got slightly out of adjustment.

No alerts or health issues on the app or going thru dashboard of car vehicle diagnostic. Must be a stupid idiot light. Now I need to decide whether visit dealer that seems to have little knowledge on car.
I never did it, but someone suggested getting a OBD reader to get any codes. An auto parts should be able o do that.

Sorry to resurect this thread but I had a similar problem on my one week old car. I used Car Scanner with an OBDII dongle and scanned the Motor Control Unit DTC's and got this:-

U028400 Lost communication with Active Grille Air Shutter 1 Motor Module

Which makes sense as Car Scanner lists U028500 as Shutter 2 Motor Module.

This happend after I had jet washed the car, and resolved itself by the following morning.

Anyway - Just wanted to add this so that both codes come up in a search. It's a non fatal code so it doesn't stop you driving the car, but you do have to wait for the "Check Electric Vehicle System" warning to disappear.

Thanks for sharing. So, its happening with the GT line as well. After a week of trying to locate a new AAF our dealer found one and installed it.

Add me to the list of people seeing this error. Wind AWD with Tech package, had the car for only a week and 700 miles. It happened the first time I turned on the car around an hour after taking it though a touchless car wash. The driver side vent opens when I turn on the car but the passenger side doesn’t. Tried jostling the vent but no luck. Hopefully it’ll magically be fixed in the morning…

This thread was very helpful to us. We were just about to leave on a road trip after charging to 100% for the first time. Got the Check Electric Vehicle System warning light after pressing start. Ran diagnostic and it was the Motor Control error message.

After reading this thread we realized that one of the front grill shutters was not opening. We left on our trip and booked a service appt in the other city, “when convenient”.

Yesterday it was hot so we started climates using the phone app. When we reached the car both grills were open. We started the car and the error message cleared after 5 seconds. Ran another diagnostic and all good.

Might be unique to our glitch but there you go. Good luck to all!

I just had this same issue occur to my EV6 wind + tech package yesterday. Error code on Kia Connect app read U028400. The car is just about a month old with 1200 miles. This morning I pressed on the front grill gently, and when I started the car, the error was no more! Strange things....

When I first saw that there was a motor operated air shutter in the front grill, I thought to myself that this is likely going to be a problem in the future. I'm thinking that in winter, ice and/ or snow could easily block or jam up this whole system. What was KIA thinking? Not everyone lives in southern California. There are months in New York when the roads are full of crap (ice, snow, salt, sand) that can (and likely will) jam up this system... This looks like a system that's going to present widespread problems for all EV6's (and maybe Ioniq 5's if they have the same technology).

Not that it matters but add me to the list. U028500 at around 4100 miles. Gonna go fiddle with it and see if starts working.

I can deal with stuff like this and I know that gen 1 vehicles are gonna struggle with things more than iterations will. But as the secondary driver of the car it doesn’t matter how I feel. My wife is the primary driver and stuff like this is almost seal breaking. She doesn’t handle stress well and things like this make her feel that car is broken. She also doesn’t do well with a MIL in a brand new car. Just doesn’t look good for the brand or my ability to sell her on an EV6 over a minivan.

I did not have the error, but I did have a small branch of a tree that got stuck in the vent when it closed. I was able to tilt the vent a little and remove it.
It could be that something got in the opening and prevented the vent to corretly open/close. Just guessing. But this could explain why error resolved itself

I had U028400 on my EV6 after 2000 miles, tried the same method here, and it fixed my problem.

Update: Today the error went away! After reading that this could be related to the active shutter, I got down there and exercised the vents lightly. Turned the car on and the error has not returned.
Can you let me know how to do this/ where the active shutter is located? I’m getting nothing trying to look this up in the manual or online and I’m having the same error code. Wanted to try it before taking it in.
