For those of you waiting for the delivery of your Kia EV9 (or if you have already received it), congratulations on a really great car! I had the opportunity to test drive it for a few days in the north and it's hard not to like it, from design, to space and technology. See below for some of my key takeaways from this test drive:

  • Background info: temperature range between 0 and -5 degrees (Celsius). Mixed driving of highway, country side roads and city.
  • Average range with full battery: c. 385 km (WLTP of 505 km). Consumption varied between 24-30 kWh/100 km depending on driving style and speed, average consumption of c. 26 kWh/100 km
  • Overall a really nice car with lots of supporting tech, suspension/chassi provides comfortable ride. Quick on the straights (0-100 in 5,3 seconds), but definitely not a sporty car as weight is c. 2,7 tonnes. Fulfills most important criteria, ie comfortable ride and good passenger space / loading capacity (333 liters with all 7 seats up, 828 liters with third row down and a whopping 2318 liters with second and third row down)
  • Wouldn’t call the interior premium, but definitely of good quality, however for a car with a starting price of 77 kEUR, I would expect a bit more regarding interior quality. Would have been great to have air suspension as option

Mind I ask a few question?
  • In Canada, we also will experience cold winter. With some days well below -20degree. If you keep the car plug in, will the car self start to maintain the battery temperature?
  • Does the front wheel pickup a lot of snow, debris onto the side of the car? I know the EV9 has good plastic cladding. I want to know if I should do PPF on the car.
  • How good is the paint? At delivery, do you notice a lot of blemish? like spider web effect on the paint.
  • Does the rear view cameras (Side, front, mirror camera and backup camera) gets dirty very easily in bad snowny condition? I believe only the mirror camera is being clean by the wiper, but the rest they are not.
  • Are the headlight, bending at the curve?
Great questions, can try to answer some of them based on the 4 days driving experience:

1) Good question, did not have the opportunity to test this. I would guess it would not self start to have the heat / pre-heat of battery on, but that is just the guess. I only tried the pre-heat functionality when driving towards a public charger, so the car was already on when going there and during charging the car was off (at e.g. -5)
2) Would say not more than any other SUV in this size. Have tested a few SUVs winter time and did not react to the EV9 being worse in that aspect. Given the price of the car, would still consider PPF to keep residual value better.
3) Paint quality looked good, no issues there
4) Both rear view mirror camera and rear view camera did not get dirty easily, especially the rear view mirror camera has good protection from the spoiler, but the wiper is working below it, so its not getting cleaned
5) Nothing I recall, but I am almost 100% it has it, as the Kia EV6 has it as standard

How does it handle in heavy snow? I'm wanting to get the AWD version to replace my Niro, because it easily gets if the snow is high.
We had pretty much snow during these days and we had no issues at all (important to use the Snow/Winter mode). Ground clearance is 17,7 cm, a bit more than the Sorento, but c. 3 cm less than e.g Model X in the highest setting. Even if the EV9 would have been even better with an additional 2-3 cm more ground clearance it was not a problem in the decent amount of snow that we had (you can check the video a few posts up to see visually the amount of snow).
