Disc brakes are at the front, which is where braking power is needed the most. At the back the (drum) brakes are helped by regeneration which brakes a lot aswell unless the battery are at 100% or very close.

I am pretty sure the braking distance would be more or less the same with drums or discs, except at 100% in all practical use.

Following years of having cars with drum brakes, it felt like a step forward when I moved to cars with disc brakes.

It might just be psychological, but it feels like it would be a real step back to have drum brakes again. The EV6 can do 0 - 60 in 5 seconds and I just feel feel safer with disc brakes all round. I’m sure drum brakes are fine in slower cars.

The main reason for disc brakes being better than drum brakes is heat dissipation. For the back wheel of a back wheel driven EV? no problem even on faster cars. The (back) brakes are just not used enough for it to become a problem.

I'll take less weigth (longer range) and practically no maintenance cost over that little chance it would help me stop faster, on a racing track. (Ok, more than a few rounds or trying to set a record on Nurnburgring I'd prefer discs all over. On my (hopefully soon to be) ev6 RWD? naaah.)

As the title suggests, had anyone test driven both or any of these cars and what are your thoughts?
Any comments appreciated
Thanks
I test drove 6 cars to decide on EV6 GT.
Overall I quite liked the Audi which was some sort of launch edition... different paint, rims, etc. But when I went through all the options in detail it all quickly got very expensive compared to a EV6 particularly the navigation/multimedia packages. The other point was the location of the ventilation vents either side of the steering wheel which I'm sure will mean your arms will boil/freeze.

Yes, perfectly adequate for an ID.4…😀
I hated them on my ID.4. I’ve now owned a Model Y and Mach-E and think the ID.4 drum brakes are terrible. I always had to over apply brake pressure on hard stops… feeling like the EV would hit the car in front. For a slow car like the ID.4 RWD with max speed of 99mph it might be borderline tolerable.

It's really easy boys and girls, drums suck. There's a reason why they are prohibited by law on the front. They should be banned completely.

Anyone putting drum brakes on a modern vehicle is simply doing so to be cheap. They are crap. They rust out horribly and that's when they get used every time you slow down.

Mark my words and let's revisit this 10 years from now. Drums are a joke. I want discs stopping my 6,000 pound EV.

Here is a photo of the local dealers well used on a daily basis EV6. Driven daily for a staff member and a customer demo car. A little rust there but look much better than drums. Rust would come off in 2 seconds with a hard stop or two :) calipers won't rust unless you use wheel acid, some car washes use it in the UK, they are the same as on my Audi A4, just not Audi stamped, no rust since 2019.

Gotta agree. I've changed brake pads on drums and they are a pain in the rear to work on. On top of that they're breaking power is less than that of disc brakes. I don't see drums making a comeback in any measurable fashion.

Yes I tested Audi Q4, Audi Q5 hybrid, Hyundai Ioniq5 and THE EV6. owning an Audi Q5 TDI I never thought I'd go away from them but I just love everything about the EV6 - it's looks, how it drives, the range, all the items included as standard in entry level "Earth" and the extras on the GT Line I ended up ordering. None of the others come close in terms of value and the 7 year warranty is unique. But ultimately THE EV6 is just an exciting car to look at and drive and isn't that what it's all about?

I tell you my honest experience on this, and it shocked me, being an Audi man for the best parts of 8 years and just giving up my 2019 A4 Avant Black Edition you will not miss the Audi Q5 TDI dinosaur. I have not thought about my A4s one time in a positive way since driving the EV6. Glad to see that back of them. Who would have thought of moving from Audi to Kia! And my neighbor...BMW M4 to Ford now!

Absolutely right. Cheapo drum brakes on a 4500 pound vehicle makes no sense. Wish the EV6 offered red calipers, though.....

The Q4 etron's arrival in the US slipped out so far in schedule that it fell off my list entirely. It originally was going to arrive 4th quarter 2021, currently it is being reported that it may be available in 3rd quarter of this year in very limited quantities....My wife's car is a 2017 audi A4, and fit/finish/engineering is very very good, so I was interested in the Q4 etron, until it became clear that it was not going to be an option.

I was the same, came from 2018/19 A4 Avant black edition, Q4 was the natural path, but it slipped off my want list after test driving the EV6. Q4 was slooooooow! and you know what, it didn't feel as good quality as the A4 or EV6 weirdly, there was one Q4 Etron 35 for sale in October 2021 locally, a light blue/silver colour, very expensive as well and only 55KW battery..... 168BHP.... If I wanted something speedy like the EV6, pricing was getting silly! well over £52K even for the ETRON 40 201BHP.... Kia hit the sweet spot with the EV6, speed/tech/looks and pricing. Forget it now though, wait times for a build are as crazy as Audi's pricing for an EV.

Test drove the eTron Q4 (premium plus) tonight, a few thoughts.

Pros
  • Seating position is good, very much feels like you're in a small SUV.
  • Ride was great, comfortable, I centered a water drain on the test drive and braced for a hard thump, that never came.
  • Butt dyno, while not as quick as the EV6 was fast enough to keep me happy, current ride is a 300whp WRX, but instant torque fills a lot of gaps.
  • Design, it's an Audi, it looks similar to everything else they've released in the last 10 years, understated, but pretty.
  • Sound and Nav, sounded great, nav was nice and the digital dash worked well (had the same on my old A5)

Cons
  • Lots of the options are buried in the infotainment, to a fault, biggest being some of the brake regen settings
  • Not sure if it was the setting I was in or what, but it doesn't "free coast" as good as the EV6
  • Lots of hard plastics in the interior, even compared to my old A5, there's more VW here than Audi
  • No surround view camera, although visibility was good and the rear camera was excellent.
  • No ventilated seats
  • No frunk at all for even a charger/cable.
  • $8k more then my GT line as configured
  • $10k more then how I'd actually configure it

In short, it's a nice choice, but I just can't justify the premium price for the lack of content and less range/power/charging when compared to the EV6.
