What do you think about the sound system?

Hi all - I just got my EV6 GT line in Snow White Pearl last week and it is AWESOME !!! Love it in almost every way and have had no software issues so far.

However the sound system really is a disappointment. I came from a BMW 3 series with upgraded B&O speakers that were great.

I've read the post/comments and reviews already and I agree with most that the bass is weak and the mid-levels and vocals sound tinny. The sound is better when using the Kia's Media system and worse with CarPlay. There is a very limited equalizer adjustment so can't do much there.

I really do love hearing great sound from the speakers when listening to music when driving.

I am not a speaker/audio expert at all and was wondering if anyone on the forum might be and provide some advice on how to improve the sound system. Would simply buying a subwoofer help? Would it be better to replace all of the speakers? Which brands would you recommend?

Thank you for any guidance anyone can provide !!

In my opinion, the Meridian sound system sucks. Full stop. Even after doing the service update, it’s still tinny and lifeless regardless of how I tweak the controls. The silly surround modes and whatnot are just gimmicks and do nothing to improve the sound, they just give you another variety of bad sound. In fact, it’s the worst sound system I’ve had in a car in the last 15 years, and none of those cars had “premium” sound systems. I have to wonder if MeridIan actually had anything to do with the EV6 stereo or if they just provided the hardware. I cant imagine that they would be happy with the result if they actually listened to it.

@avh do you think it would be easy to just tap the cigarette lighter behind the panel or behind the port, essentially making it a cleaner install?
Probably. I like the idea of just plugging it in . Sure it sticks out. But for me the EV6 would be my work vehicle. Right now it is my Sportage. I use the cigarette lighter plug in the trunk a ton with all kinds of tools. If I wired it directly to the plug , I could not unplug it anymore and would risk over heating or overloading the plug with my tool use.

The port cap has a label that reads 180W which corresponds to 15 Amps I believe. I was using the subwoofer for a few days at high volume and the fuses are intact. In my case there are 3 fuses: car, cable and amplifier. All 15 Amps.

Just installed. What a difference. I turned the infotainment bass down to 3 and increased the volume of subwoofer. So much cleaner and such an improvement. I think I put the sub volume a little too high. We will see because I will continue to bring it down slowly. What setting do you have? Thanks for the tips and idea @avh

You are welcome. I turned the infotainment bass down to 7 and the active subwoofer about half way as it came from the factory.
Enjoy your system, I find that I spend more time in my car after upgrading the subwoofer.

Where's the photos? ;)

I just ordered a Rockville SS8P 400w 8" Slim Under-Seat Active Powered Car/Truck Subwoofer Sub. I'm planning on swapping the original speaker and it should fit in the same location. I will be using the trunk cigarette port which provides 15 Amps to power the active speaker. The port should be off when the car is off and prevent battery drain.

It should arrive in a week, I will keep you posted.

I'm hoping not to cut any wires in case I want to put the original speaker back. Does anyone know the connector type for the original Meridian trunk speaker? It has 4 pins.
Did you get this all hooked up and does it drain the battery? Does it work ok?

I recently installed a custom 8 inch fiberglass woofer taking up the bottom area where the oem stock sub did. It is a Dayton audio HO series 8 inch woofer with a 375w rms amp (skar audio 1200 something) and makes more than enough bass. That plus some eq touchups I did on the midrange really make the sound quite good (coming from an audio systems engineer background). Anyone interested in details message me. View attachment 4727
Looks great and can you tell me how it is working so far? Draining the battery? All ok??? Thanks
